ABOUT MAI
MAI is a platform for immaterial art and long durational works, including those of performance art, dance, theater, film, music, opera, science, nature, technology, and undiscovered forms that may develop in the future. MAI is an incubator for collaboration among emerging and established individuals working in these fields.
Currently, MAI acts as an immaterial institute, hosting live events at partner venues, presenting collaborative projects, and educating the public about long durational works through its online platforms. For information about current and upcoming MAI events, click here.
MAI Hudson, a building located in Hudson, New York, is being re-designed by The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). Once renovated, this building will be the home of MAI, providing a space for long durational works, multidisciplinary collaboration, educational programming, and the Abramovic Method.
In een tijd waarin sociale contacten voornamelijk lijken te bestaan binnen het digitale kader van het beeldscherm is het werk van Abramovic misschien een mooi moment om de waarde van dergelijke contacten weer eens ter discussie te stellen. Het fysieke karakter van haar werk confronteert de beschouwer met de aanwezigheid van het eigen lichaam. Deze fysieke confrontatie verhoogt de intensiteit van het contact wat mooi te zien is in het werk; the artist is present. Het een op een, in elkaars ogen kijken zonder een woord te wisselen lijkt een band te herstellen uit een ver verleden waarin we nog de tijd namen voor elkaar.
Voor Abramovic is het de start van een nieuwe missie; ze wil binnen afzienbare tijd een instituut realiseren waar de bezoeker // gebruiker via allerlei instructies weer in contact kan treden met het fysieke hier en nu.
